Make the next step clear for you, your local contact and your adviser. Use eight questions to identify unresolved decisions, assign a responsible role and record the evidence still needed.
For owners keeping a Canadian home as a rental. This preparation sheet does not determine tax residence, provide an election or filing decision, confirm insurance coverage, or replace local tenancy forms.
For monthly records, use the free rental-records organizer. Keep rent, costs, withholding, remittances and owner transfers separate, along with the transaction date and reporting period.

Status choices: Not started · Requested · Needs review · Confirmed by owner. “Confirmed by owner” is your own record of a confirmation, not verification by NR6, CRA or an insurer. Missing evidence remains an open question.
Who will review my residency position, and what facts and documents do they need?
What use-change records, valuation information and questions should I prepare for my tax adviser?
What written response do I need from my insurer or broker about the proposed rental, absence, coverage and inspections?
What should I confirm separately with the lender, condominium or strata body, and local authority about the proposed use?
Who handles tenant messages and repairs if I am unavailable? What backup, contact method and spending authority have we agreed?
Who checks the applicable provincial or territorial process, prepares the tenancy and condition records, and keeps the evidence?
Who supplies the rental records, reviews missing documents and confirms receipt for each reporting period?
Who will confirm the applicable withholding arrangement, any NR6 work, NR4 records, and Section 216 filing and payment steps?
Preparation questions only. A filled sheet is not proof of filing, payment, approval or readiness to rent.
